[the skinny] Contains the story, "Private Pleasures." Lee was invited to submit to this Zebra-author-only horror anthology, and his first submission was rejected. What story did they turn down? “The Wrong Guy,” with a comment from the editor: “I could get fired if I published this.” So Lee decided to approach the invitation from a different creative angle, moving from penis-dissecting bimboes to a alomancy. What’s alomancy? An ancient Babylonian ritual that used salt to predict the future. In “Private Pleasures,” two downtown scumbags abduct their very own salt-diviner, then they figure they can use his skills to strike it rich at the race track. But there’s a catch. First, they have to cut off his arms and legs. And then... This story made the Preliminary Ballot for Best Short Horror Story of 1993, HWA's Bram Stoker Award.
