[the skinny] Two very controversial stories: “The Dritiphilist,” by Lee, and “Damaged Goods,” by Lee’s friend Ryan Harding. They were originally set to be published by Gargadillo Books until that company’s unfortunate collapse. Harding’s piece won the 1999 World Horror Gross-Out Contest . To put it mildly, Lee’s Seattle-set story involves bums, bus stops, and a man with a...peculiar obsessive-compulsive disorder. “This is a story that I’m ashamed of,” Lee once said. “I got the idea for the piece while waiting for the Route 16 bus in one of Seattle’s seamier districts. I rode home numb, shaking my head at myself, wondering how I could possibly think of such a thing, much less write it. I was mortified with myself when I actually did.” Indeed, to the tune of 6000 words. But if you want to know what a dritiphilist is, you’ll just have to read it yourself because it’s too gross to describe here.
