PORTRAIT

Potrait of the Psychopath as a Young Woman

[who did it] Necro Publications; June, 1998 (signed limited-edition hardcover [150 copies] and trade paperback [500 copies] Acrylic slipcased super deluxe edition [26 copies]).

[chance of gettin'] Trade paperback can still be had from Necro Publications. However, the hardcovers are hard to find and the deluxes are also rare, but Wrigley-Cross Books books may have one.

[the skinny] The full title is PORTRAIT OF THE PSYCHOPATH AS A YOUNG WOMAN. The effectiveness of this book as a police-procedural is right up there with McBain, Harris, and Cornwell. So why didn’t it sell mass-market? “It’s way too gross,” Lee admits after the fact. Its painstakingly accurate portrayal of the psychological and criminalistic angle of child pornography throw this one too far into even today’s taboo margins. Oh, and lots of penises get cut off with autopsy shears. Nevertheless, this collaboration with federal crime analyst Elizabeth Steffen won’t disappoint any fans of this genre. It just might make them sick. One reviewer called the antagonist in the book “The Ultimate Female Serial Killer.” ‘Nuff said. Lee and Steffen hope they someday find the time to do a major rewrite and try to get this one into the mass-market.
